Instagram Clone Features: One Publishing Engine, a Shop and a Wallet

The surface of a visual social app is easy to copy. What separates a working product is what sits underneath: who may see a post, where money moves and how an operator steps in. This page follows a post through the whole platform, picks out the modules that carry the commercial weight, compares the product with the original app and a ground-up build, and lists what we set up around it.

All 46 Instagram Clone features, by role

The complete list, grouped by the person who uses each feature. Nothing is hidden behind a plan tier: this is what ships in the platform.

Members

13 features
One composer, many formats
Single images, carousels, reels, 24-hour stories and highlights are published through the same engine.
Crop before upload
Images are cropped in the composer, so the shape a member chooses is the shape everyone sees.
Scheduled publishing
Posts can be dated for later, and a queue promotes them when their time comes.
Audio library and remixes
Reels can use tracks from a browsable audio library, and a remix keeps a link back to the original.
Likes and private saves
Likes and saves work across posts and reels, with saves visible only to the member who made them.
Threaded comments
Replies nest under the comment they answer, and each comment can be reported on its own.
Reposts with notes
A member can share someone else content to their own followers and add a comment of their own.
Follows and requests
Public accounts can be followed freely, while private accounts queue follow requests for approval.
Blocks inside the visibility rule
Blocking is part of the same rule that decides what anyone sees, so a blocked account cannot read around it.
Hashtag following
Members follow topics as well as people, so the feed draws on interests that do not depend on who they know.
Close friends stories
A close friends list lets a member share a story with a chosen few.
Direct and group messages
One-to-one and small-group chats show presence and typing, and non-followers go to a requests inbox.
Vanish mode
Messages in a vanish chat clear when the conversation is closed.

Creators

12 features
Verified subscription
Members buy a badge on a plan the operator names and prices, or apply free through review.
Per-creator tiers
Each creator defines tiers with named perks and prices, and subscribers unlock what each tier promises.
Premium-gated posts
Posts can be limited to subscribers or to a minimum tier, with the check enforced by the database.
Gift catalogue
Fans send gifts from an operator-managed catalogue, paid from wallet balance.
Live broadcasting
WebRTC streaming with real-time chat lets creators go live from the app.
Host chat bans
Hosts can ban a viewer from chat, and the ban is applied by a database trigger rather than the interface.
Live replay
Replays are stored in a private bucket and delivered through signed URLs.
Fundraiser posts
A post can carry a goal amount, a deadline and a running total of contributions.
Self-serve promotion
Creators promote posts and reels on CPC or CPM pricing with a daily budget cap.
Shoppable tags
Product tags sit at chosen positions on posts and reels and open the shop listing.
Thirty-day analytics
Impressions, engagement rate, reach and top content are charted for the last thirty days.
Earnings charts
Income across tiers, gifts, ads and shop sales is shown on one screen from the live tables.

Sellers

9 features
Product listings
Sellers publish products with galleries of several images and details.
Per-seller cart
Buyers add items to a cart that groups them by seller for checkout.
Order lifecycle
Orders move through defined states, so sellers and buyers share one view of progress.
Live drops
A seller features products during a live stream, and viewers buy from the same catalogue.
Server-checked pricing
Prices are looked up on the server, so a forged request cannot change what a buyer pays.
Recalculated totals
Order totals are rebuilt from their items, and the order record is locked against later tampering.
Operator-driven refunds
Refunds are issued from the commerce panel and credited to the buyer wallet.
Fee as a ledger row
The platform fee on a delivered order is stored as its own entry, so revenue is auditable per order.
Wallet payment
Buyers pay from wallet balance, which ties the shop to the same ledger as gifts and subscriptions.

Operators

12 features
Overview with trends
Platform KPIs with a thirty-day trend load through an edge function so the dashboard stays quick.
User administration
Search accounts, suspend or restore them and soft-delete with a recovery window.
Staff roles
Moderators and administrators have different powers, and the admin grant itself is done outside the interface.
Verification queue
Applications with legal name, category, country and documents are reviewed in their own queue.
Plan catalogue
Verification plans can be added, renamed, repriced, reordered and switched off.
Reversible content actions
Hiding and deleting posts, reels, comments and messages can be undone, and each action is attributed.
Moderation workflow
Reports move through five states with four priorities, assignees, internal notes and bulk actions.
Commerce panel
Order lifecycle, product oversight and refunds are managed together.
Promotions control
Any live ad campaign can be force-paused, and spend can be checked against the event ledger.
Revenue panel
Subscriptions, gifts, ads and order fees are totaled with a thirty-day trend from the ledger itself.
System tools
Seed demo content, provision demo accounts and force-publish stalled scheduled posts without a database console.
Append-only audit log
Every privileged action records actor, target and time, and the log can be read and exported.

One post, from the composer to the ledger

Every module in this product exists to move a piece of content through identity, visibility, engagement, commerce and settlement. Follow one post, and you see how members, creators, sellers and operators each touch it, and where the rules that protect everyone are enforced.

  1. An account starts with a privacy footing

At sign-up the member chooses a handle, an account type of personal, creator or business, and a theme. Personal details are written to a separate private record from the first moment, and optional two-factor sign-in is available. The account begins public or private, and every later visibility question refers back to that choice.

  2. The composer handles every format

A single composer produces single images, multi-image carousels, vertical reels and stories that expire. Pictures are cropped before upload, and a post can be dated for the future and held in a queue. Because all formats pass through one pipeline, creators learn one tool and you maintain one code path.

  3. Commerce and gating are applied at creation

While composing, a creator can mark a post as premium for subscribers, require a minimum tier, and place shoppable tags at chosen spots on the image or reel. These choices are stored with the post itself, so the rules follow the content into the feed, the profile and any share.

  4. One visibility rule decides who can see it

When the post is requested, a single database rule answers whether this viewer may read it, taking into account public or private status, follows, pending requests and blocks. Storage for the images and videos refers to the same rule, so private media is only handed out through signed links.

  5. Members react, reply and message

Likes and private saves work across posts and reels, comments are threaded, and a repost can carry a note. Direct messages run one to one or in small groups with presence and typing signals. Notifications for these events are produced inside the database, so they fire identically wherever the action came from.

  6. A tagged product turns viewing into buying

A tap on a shoppable tag opens a product from the same catalogue the shop uses. Items from different sellers sit in a per-seller cart with grouped checkout, and live broadcasts can feature products too. Discovery and checkout happen on one surface, so the buyer is never handed off and lost.

  7. Money moves in one guarded step

Subscriptions, gifts, ad spend and order fees each run as a single atomic function that locks the wallet, moves value and writes an append-only entry. A balance is therefore always the sum of its rows. The platform fee on an order is stored as its own row, so revenue can be audited order by order.

  8. Operators moderate, refund and audit

In the console, staff triage reports through a workflow with states, priorities, assignment and notes, verify accounts, refund an order straight back to the buyer wallet, or pause a live ad campaign. Destructive actions are reversible within a recovery window, and each privileged step is recorded in a log that cannot be edited from the interface.

The modules that carry the commercial weight

A feed, a profile and a like button are not what an operator is buying. These are the parts that decide whether the platform is safe to open to the public and able to earn once it is, which is where most home-built attempts run into trouble.

  • Single privacy gate

One rule in the database decides every content visibility question, and every content policy and storage bucket refers to it. A mistake in a screen cannot expose a private post, because the database refuses the read. Changing the rule changes it everywhere at once, which is exactly what a security reviewer will test.

  • Five creator revenue lines

Verified plans, per-creator tiers, gifts, self-serve ads and shop commission all exist in the product from the first day, each with its own settlement and its own ledger row. Creators stay where they earn most, and having several lines means no single behavior carries the whole income. A photographer might lean on tiers and a shop while a comedian leans on gifts during live broadcasts, and the same wallet handles both without extra setup.

  • Typed wallet ledger

Every monetary event is an atomic, row-locked function that appends an entry rather than editing a balance. Reconciliation becomes a query instead of an investigation, and finance can close a month without arguing about where a number came from. It is the part of a social app that most often goes wrong.

  • Native shop with tags

The catalogue, seller listings, per-seller cart, order lifecycle and refunds live in the same database as the content that sells them. A shoppable tag and a live drop reference the identical products, so the shop does not feel bolted on and sellers do not manage inventory twice. Stock levels and prices are edited in one place, so a sold-out item disappears from every tag and every live drop together.

  • Live with enforced bans

Broadcasts use real-time video with chat, featured products and a replay afterward, and chat bans are enforced by the database so a banned account cannot slip back in through a client quirk. Hosts earn from gifts while they stream, and the replay keeps the show working as an asset.

  • Scheduled publishing

Future-dated posts wait in a queue and are promoted by a background function at the chosen time. Creators and brand teams can plan a week in one sitting, and operators have tools to force a publication if something stalls, which matters for campaigns tied to a launch hour.

  • Twelve-panel operator console

Overview, users, staff, content, commerce, promotions, revenue and system tools, with moderation, verification and plans alongside, replace raw database access. Moderators and administrators see different panels, so the screens that move money stay with fewer people. The practical result is that a new hire can be trained on a single panel and given exactly the access the job needs, instead of being handed a database login.

  • Runtime white-label settings

Name, tagline, logo, favicons, media policy and ad economics are configuration values. Rebranding or repricing is an operator action rather than a deployment, which means you can adjust the commercial setup after launch without calling a developer. Test a new ad price or a different creator share with a small group first, then apply it widely, because changes to a live economy are noticed by creators within days.

Instagram versus this platform versus a ground-up build

The original app is a closed, advertising-led service that you can only use. This product reproduces the interaction patterns and hands you the controls, while a custom build gives you total freedom at the price of time. These are well-known model differences, not claims about any company business.

Technology under the interface

The stack is mainstream and widely hired for, which keeps you from depending on a niche skill. The database is the source of truth for privacy, money and notifications, so it is worth knowing which pieces do which job before your own developers take over.

Technology under the interface
Front endReact 18, TypeScript 5 and Vite 5, with Radix primitives and Tailwind CSS 3 for the interface.
Data and formsTanStack Query 5 for server data, with react-hook-form and zod for forms and validation.

What we set up around the platform with you

Everything in the feature list is shipped. These items we set up around it for your build, and we would rather you plan for them now than find out during your build. Several of them simply need your own provider accounts.

  • Live payment capture

The wallet, ledger and every settlement function are complete. Taking real money means connecting Stripe, Razorpay, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay with your own merchant credentials, which only you can open.

  • Email, SMS and push delivery

The notification model is finished and the mobile bundle supports delivery. Wiring Apple and Firebase push, plus your email and SMS providers, is configuration against accounts in your name.

  • Automated content moderation

Typed reports, queues, priorities, assignment and takedown all ship. Automatic classification of images, video and captions ahead of the human queue is available for operators whose volume outgrows manual review.

  • Full-text search

User and hashtag search ship ready. Searching through every caption and comment needs indexing work that we set up with scope confirmed at kickoff. Until then, tag hygiene and clear profile names carry most discovery for a community of modest size.

  • Large group messaging

Conversations work one to one and in small groups today. Bigger groups with roles, admin controls and retention rules are available as an extension we set up for your build.

  • Enterprise and token features

Single sign-on, data residency selection, extended retention, token-gated access and warehouse export are available and scoped against your requirements. Tell us early if your buyers insist on any of them, because they affect the estimate and the delivery plan.

  • Production hardening

Secrets management, network policy and monitoring are governed by your deployment and covered by a documented checklist you run on your own infrastructure, rather than claimed as built-in coverage.

Instagram Clone feature FAQs

Can a post be scheduled and does it need someone online?

Scheduled posts are held in a publish queue and promoted by a background function at the chosen time, so nobody needs to be online. If something stalls, operators have tools to force a publication, which is useful when a launch hour matters for a campaign.

What happens to a story after twenty-four hours?

A story expires from the tray after a day. Members can pin selected stories to highlights on their profile, so useful material stays reachable. That keeps casual sharing disposable while letting creators and brands keep reference content within easy reach for new followers.

How are private accounts and blocks enforced?

A single database rule decides visibility, covering public and private accounts, follows, pending follow requests and blocks. Because storage uses the same rule, private media is served only through signed links, and a bug in a screen cannot override what the database refuses to read.

Can members buy things without leaving a post?

Yes. Creators place shoppable tags on posts and reels, and a tap opens the product from the shop catalogue. Items from several sellers sit in a per-seller cart with grouped checkout, and live broadcasts can feature products, so discovery and purchase stay on one surface.

How do creators see how they are doing?

Creators have charts for impressions, engagement rate, reach and earnings across the recent period, plus the revenue from tiers, gifts and sales in one place. Operators see platform-level figures in the console, so both sides can judge what works without exporting data.

Is the mobile app a separate codebase?

No. Android and iOS are produced from the same bundle as the web app, with native camera capture, haptics and status-bar theming added by the wrapper. That keeps features from drifting between platforms, and the admin panels are part of the same bundle.

Can I run the platform without the shop or live features?

Yes. Capabilities can be enabled, disabled or extended to suit your model, region and audience. Which monetization surfaces appear, how the shop behaves and how strict verification is are operator settings, so a pure content community and a full commerce network can share the product.
