Reddit Clone Development Cost: Price, Extras and Running Costs

A community platform has two kinds of cost: the software and the work of running a community. This page gives the one-time price of the ready-made platform, compares it with building or renting, lists what is inside, and names the tailored work and running bills that sit beside it so your budget matches reality.

What the Reddit clone price covers

The ready-made platform costs $3,699, paid once. For that you receive the full source code for the web app, the API, the Android app and the operator console, together with the schema, migrations and documentation, branded with your name and deployed on a host you choose. There is no per-seat charge, no monthly license and no share of your premium or coin revenue. The price covers the scope shown in the demo, so everything a member and an operator can do there is already part of what you buy, with tailored work described below.

That makes it a cost of a different kind from a rented community service. The price does not climb with your member count. What changes as you grow is the bill from your hosting provider, your payment gateways and the people who moderate and support the community, all of which are described below and all of which you control. Budget in layers: the purchase first, then hosting and gateways that move with traffic, then people, and last any tailored work. Only the first layer is fixed and paid before launch.

Ready-made, custom build or rented community software

There are three realistic routes to a community platform, and their costs behave differently over time. The table compares them in qualitative terms, because figures for routes we do not sell depend on your scope, your region and who you hire.

Everything covered by the one-time price

The price covers the complete platform and the handover around it. Nothing below is billed separately or rented back to you, and all of it stays with you after the support period ends.

  • Complete Next.js and Prisma source code, with schema, migrations and seed scripts
  • The responsive member web platform
  • A branded Android app with push notifications on the same API
  • The full set of API route handlers, grouped by domain
  • Moderator tooling for every community
  • An operator admin console with statistics, revenue and integration status
  • An entity diagram, schema guide, API collection and developer and security handbook
  • A Playwright and Vitest test setup with a health endpoint
  • Complete white-labeling under your name, logo and colors
  • Deployment on your host and an operator walkthrough
  • Support for submitting the Android app to the store
  • 60 days of technical support and 1 year of free updates

What moves the cost above the base price

The base price does not change with the size of your membership. Anything that raises the total is tailored work around the ready-made scope, and we confirm each item with you before it starts, so you approve a figure and do not watch one accumulate.

  1. Native iOS client

The Android app is included, and we can set up an iOS client too, which shares the same API and push setup. Its cost depends on how many of the web screens you want matched on iPhone, and on whether you want it ready for the first release.

  2. AI-assisted moderation

Moderators work from queues and per-community rules today. Adding automated screening of text or images, or suggestions in the queue, is tailored work we set up, and its price depends on the provider you pick and on how much of the decision you want to automate. A typical trigger is spam arriving faster than volunteers can clear it, at which point a screening step that holds suspicious posts for review costs less than more staff.

  3. Enterprise sign-on

OAuth sign-in is built. If a company or school wants logins tied to its own identity provider, with single sign-on and directory sync, that is an integration scoped around the systems involved and the roles they need mapped. A school community that only admits staff and students, for example, needs sign-in tied to its own accounts and roles that follow the directory, which is why it is scoped with the systems in view.

  4. Creator payouts

Awards are bought with coins and recorded on the ledger, and we can set up paying creators from award income. Designing payout rules, thresholds and tax handling is tailored work, and it is worth settling before you promise anything to creators. Typical decisions are the minimum balance, how often creators are paid and who handles tax forms, and each of them should be written down before a creator is promised anything.

  5. Production hardening

Replay protection for payment webhooks and distributed rate limits across several servers are recommended before heavy traffic. We discuss these with you during deployment, and we confirm the work beyond the standard setup with you. These protect against a repeated payment message crediting a member twice and against abuse that slips past a limit held on only one server, so plan them before a promotion drives a traffic spike.

  6. Custom flows and design

Rebranding is included. A distinct layout, a bespoke onboarding path or new post types for a specific audience is design and development work, usually measured in weeks, and priced on the scope you agree rather than on a guess. A support community might want a ticket-style post type, while a news community might want a different front page, and each is scoped by listing screens and behavior first.

The six-day Reddit Clone launch, day by day

Launch takes six working days from kickoff. This is who does what on each day, so the schedule has no surprises on either side.

Six-day launch plan for the Reddit Clone
DayWhat we doWhat you do
Day 1Kickoff and community model We confirm your name, the first communities you plan to open and which premium and coin features go live. Share brand assets, the list of starting communities and your draft community rules.
Day 2Branding and configuration We apply your brand to the web platform and Android app and set the site configuration values you chose. Confirm pricing for premium, coin packs and awards before we set them.
Day 3Environment and database We stand up the production build, PostgreSQL schema, migrations and seed data on the host you chose. Provide hosting access, a domain and the email provider details.
Day 4Providers and secrets We connect sign-in, billing, email and push providers and set the secrets and job schedules. Create Stripe or Razorpay accounts and share the keys and webhook secrets securely.
Day 5Moderation and operator setup We create admin accounts, check the moderation queue, automod rules and integration status screen. Name the first moderators and review the removal reasons and ban policy.
Day 6Walkthrough and handover We walk post, vote, report, ban, appeal and purchase flows with you, then transfer source and documentation. Test as member, moderator and admin and approve the handover.

Running costs that sit outside the price

Owning the code removes license fees, but a community still has operating bills. They are paid to other companies on accounts you hold, so you can see and compare them. Plan for these alongside the purchase.

  • Hosting and database

The web app, API and database run on a host you choose, either a managed platform or your own servers. Costs depend on traffic and stored data, and scale with how active your members are, so size it for busy hours.

  • File and media storage

Images and videos uploaded by members take space and bandwidth. A text-heavy community stays light, while a media-heavy one can grow quickly, so decide what limits on size and type you will set from the start. Image and video uploads also need a policy on formats and size, so decide early whether to compress on upload, set a size limit and clear old files, to avoid a surprise bill.

  • Payment gateway fees

Stripe and Razorpay charge their own fees on premium and coin purchases. Those fees are taken by the gateways on your account, not by us, and they reduce what each purchase brings to you. Refunds and disputes arrive at the gateway and affect your balance, so decide whether a refunded coin purchase removes the coins or sends the wallet negative, and write it in your terms.

  • Email, sign-in and push

Transactional email, OAuth providers and push services each need accounts in your name. Most have free allowances at low volume, but sending digests to a large membership can become a meaningful monthly cost. A weekly digest to a large membership is the line that grows fastest, so let members choose their frequency and watch the first month of volume before you widen the mailing.

  • Distributed rate limiting

If you run more than one server, enforcing limits across them needs Upstash Redis. It is a small cost for a small community and grows with the traffic it protects, but it is an extra service to subscribe to. You only need it when requests are spread across several servers, so a small community on one server can wait, but plan for it before you scale or run a campaign.

  • Moderation and community staff

Volunteers help, but a serious community still needs paid oversight, someone to train moderators, answer appeals and handle escalations. The tooling is included, but the people are not, and they are often the largest ongoing cost. Typical roles are a lead who trains volunteers, a person who answers appeals within a stated time and an owner for escalations, which together keep trust without constant firefighting.

  • Store developer account

Publishing the Android app needs a developer account with the store, and a later iOS client needs another. Account fees and review outcomes belong to you, though we help prepare and submit the app. Keep the logins and billing contact with a named person at your company, because an app listing is tied to the account that created it and is hard to move later.

Why the price is fixed and what we commit to

The price is set when you buy and does not depend on your member count, the volume of posts or what your communities earn. We are paid for the software once, and we take nothing from your premium or coin revenue afterwards. That keeps our interests aligned with yours: a delivery that works, and a platform you can run without us.

In return we commit to the delivery terms: six working days to a branded platform, deployment on your host, 60 days of technical support and a year of free updates. Work beyond the base is confirmed with us before it starts, so the figure you agreed to is the figure you pay. If a request would change the delivery date or the price, we say so in writing before starting, and you decide whether to go ahead without affecting the base delivery.

Reddit Clone cost FAQs

Is there a recurring license fee?

No. You pay once and own the code, with no per-seat fee and no revenue share. Your recurring costs are the services you choose to run it on, such as hosting, payment gateways, email and push providers.

Does the price include hosting?

No. We deploy on a host you choose, which can be a managed platform or your own servers. Keeping hosting separate lets you pick a provider that fits your budget and region, and change later without involving us.

How is tailored work estimated?

We scope the work with you first, then quote for that scope. Typical custom projects take two to eight weeks. Because the stack is mainstream, you can also give the same work to your own developers or another agency.

Will the price rise as my membership grows?

No. The one-time price is fixed. Growth affects what you pay your hosting provider and payment gateways, and perhaps your moderation budget, but it does not change the amount you paid for the software. For instance, a much larger community needs more hosting and moderation, but the purchase itself is not recalculated, so you can plan growth without renegotiating.

Is the Android app included?

Yes. A branded Android app with push notifications is included and runs on the same API as the web app. We help with submitting it to the store, though the account and the review decision are yours.

What happens after the support period?

You keep the platform and the code. The 60 days of technical support are followed by a year of free updates. After that you can maintain it with your own engineers or ask us about paid help if you want it.

Can I test before I decide?

Yes. The demo has sample accounts for a member, a moderator and an operator, so you can try posting, enforcing rules and reading revenue. Spending time there tells you more about fit than any feature list.
